What do you always carry when you're going to be out all day?

I have Type 2 and most days my routine is pretty predictable, but once or twice a week work gets completely chaotic. I might leave home thinking I'll be back by lunch and suddenly I'm still outside at 6pm.

The biggest problem is food. I either go way too long without eating or get so hungry that I end up grabbing whatever is available. I've also had days where I walked much more than usual and started feeling shaky while I was nowhere near home.

I'm thinking of making a small bag that just stays ready with my meter, water and a few things to eat so I don't have to think about it every morning.

For those of you who spend long days outside, what do you actually keep in your bag? I'm looking for simple things that won't spoil quickly or take up half my backpack.

I have a small pouch that basically lives in my work bag. Meter, strips, glucose tablets and a couple of snacks. I only take it out to refill something.

That was the trick for me. If I had to remember everything every morning I'd forget half of it.

Yeah I think having one permanent bag is what I need. Right now everything is in different places around the house.

Nuts have saved me so many times. I keep those little packets in my office drawer, car and backpack.

Just remember they're normal food, not something I'd rely on for treating a low quickly.

Good distinction. I was kind of thinking of all snacks as the same thing until now.

My backpack looks like I'm preparing for a small disaster 😂

Water bottle, meter, glucose tabs, biscuits, roasted chana, nuts and usually a protein bar. Most of it sits there untouched for weeks, but the one day I need it I'm very happy it's there.

Same. Every bag I own eventually develops an emergency snack compartment.

Roasted chana is a good idea. I was trying to think of something other than protein bars because I get tired of those very quickly.

If you're actually having episodes where you feel shaky, I'd mention that to your doctor, especially depending on what medication you're taking. Not everyone with Type 2 has the same risk of going low.

For the practical side, I carry glucose tablets because they're small and I don't accidentally eat them just because I'm bored 😄

That's a very good point about not eating them randomly 😂 Any normal snack I keep in the car has a short life expectancy.

I set an alarm on my phone on busy days. Sounds stupid but otherwise I can work straight through lunch and only realize when I'm exhausted and irritated at everyone.

The bag helps, but remembering to actually use what's inside the bag was another problem for me.

Not stupid at all. I've definitely carried food around all day and then forgotten to eat it.

For really long days I take a small insulated lunch bag. Then I can bring curd, paneer, fruit or whatever I've packed instead of depending completely on packaged snacks.

For normal errands I wouldn't bother, but if I know I'm going to be gone for 8 or 10 hours it's worth carrying.

I like this for the days I know in advance will be long. I don't want every meal outside the house to become nuts and protein bars.

Type 1 here, so my bag has a lot more diabetes stuff in it. Insulin, needles, meter backup, fast carbs, spare supplies depending on where I'm going, plus normal food.

If I'm going somewhere far from home I basically assume something will fail and bring a backup 😅

Also T1 and this is exactly my mentality. Going to the supermarket? Normal kit. Going somewhere for the entire day? Suddenly I'm packing like I'm crossing a desert.

Makes sense. I should have mentioned I'm Type 2 in the title because I can see the answers are very different depending on the type and treatment.

Water. Seriously. Everyone remembers snacks and then spends six hours outside with one tiny bottle of water 😅

I carry a refillable bottle everywhere now.

One boring tip: check the expiry dates once in a while. I opened my emergency snack pouch recently and found a protein bar that looked like it belonged in a museum.

😂 I found glucose tablets in an old handbag that had basically become one giant glucose tablet.
