Two meters, two numbers, and I was not sure which one to trust

I checked my glucose using two different meters from the same finger and got different results.

I expected them to be almost identical, so seeing two numbers made me wonder if one of the meters was faulty or if this kind of difference can happen normally.

For people who have compared different glucose meters, what usually causes different readings? How do you decide whether the difference is acceptable or whether something needs to be checked?

I had the same experience when I bought a second meter. I thought one had to be wrong, but I learned that home meters are not designed to give exactly the same number every single time.

Small differences can happen because of the way meters measure glucose and normal variation in testing. The important thing is whether the readings are generally within an expected range.

I would first check the simple things: are the strips from the same meter, are they stored properly, are they expired, and did you wash and dry your hands before testing?

Hand washing was the thing I overlooked. I did not realize something small like residue on fingers could affect a reading.

If two meters repeatedly give very different results, I would check the meters and strips rather than ignoring it. A single comparison does not always tell the whole story.

Different meters can also have different accuracy specifications. I think it helps to use one meter consistently for tracking instead of switching between several devices randomly.
