The first time my pump stopped, I did not know how urgent it was

I have been using an insulin pump and recently started thinking about what happens if insulin delivery is interrupted.

I understand that a pump does not work the same way as long-acting injections, but I am not clear on how quickly a delivery problem can become serious or when ketone testing becomes important.

For people who have dealt with pump failures, blocked infusion sets, or unexpected interruptions, what signs helped you decide when to check ketones and take action?

This was one of my biggest concerns when starting a pump. I learned that having a backup plan and knowing the steps ahead of time made me much less stressed.

Same here. The first few times I worried a lot, but having supplies and knowing what to check helped.

One thing I did not realize before using a pump is that it relies on continuous insulin delivery. A problem with the pump or infusion set can affect insulin availability differently than a missed injection of long-acting insulin.

My diabetes team told me to pay attention to unexpected high glucose readings, especially if they continue despite correction attempts. That is when checking the system and considering ketones becomes important.

Yes, I was told not to ignore a pattern of rising glucose just because I had already given a correction.

I keep ketone testing supplies available because I do not want to be searching for them during a stressful situation. Preparing before there is a problem makes a difference.
