Insulin injections during periods?

Does anyone else find insulin injections much harder when they're on their period?

I get really bad cramps and bloating, and on the worst days I don't want anything touching my stomach. Even trying to pinch the skin to inject feels horrible. My hands also get shaky when the pain is bad, so sometimes I sit there with the pen for ages before I can actually do it.

I've always used my stomach most of the time, so I'm wondering what other women do on days like this. Do you use another injection site until the pain settles down?

Thighs for me. When my cramps are bad I really don't want anything near my stomach, so I use the other injection sites my diabetes nurse showed me.

I've barely used my thighs because I'm so used to my stomach. I should probably ask my diabetes team to go over the other sites with me again.

Same here. The first couple of days my stomach gets so tender that even my waistband annoys me 😭 I just avoid my abdomen until it settles down.

The waistband thing is so real. Sometimes even jeans feel unbearable.

I'd check with your diabetes team about which alternative sites are suitable for you. Insulin absorption can vary depending on the injection site, so it's useful to know what they recommend rather than just switching randomly.

That's what I was worried about. I don't want to change something and then wonder why my readings are behaving differently.

Honestly my glucose during my period annoys me more than the injections 😂 A few days before mine starts my numbers suddenly become much harder to manage.

Mine does this too, then once my period actually starts I sometimes go the other way and start running lower. Took me ages to notice there was a pattern.

Okay I'm glad it's not just me. My numbers definitely seem less predictable around the same time every month.

If the pain is bad enough that your hands are shaking and it's making it difficult to take your insulin, I'd mention that to the doctor treating the period pain too. That's a pretty significant amount of pain.

Yeah, I probably need to bring that up properly instead of just saying my periods are painful.

If you've mostly been injecting around the same area of your stomach, it might also be worth asking your nurse about site rotation. I got way too comfortable using the same few spots until my nurse pointed it out.
