Let us briefly discuss what happens in Type 1 Diabetes
- Type 1DM occurs due to autoimmune process where the body itself destroys the cells in the pancreas,, which produce insulin.
- Because of the lack of insulin blood glucose will be elevated.
- The treatment options available are insulin and analogs, insulin pump, insulin pumps with continuous glucose monitoring technology (closed-loop devices or artificial pancreas).
- Therapies which are in developmental stages are immunotherapy stem cell therapy pancreatic islet cell transplantation.
These are partly successful for remission in some of the animal and preclinical studies in humans, but studies are in underway to assess long term remission.
Unfortunately, as of now, there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes.
The patient has to depend on insulin, otherwise dangerous consequences like diabetic ketoacidosis can precipitate.
The patients should never skip insulin even in illness, and they should immediately contact the doctor for insulin dose adjustments.
