A diabetes risk calculator helps you estimate your risk of developing type 2 diabetes based on common health and lifestyle factors. It uses a scoring system that takes into account age, gender, ethnicity, family history, waist circumference, body mass index (BMI), and blood pressure status. The final result categorizes your risk as low, medium, high, or very high.
This tool is designed to provide a simple way to assess your diabetes risk before any symptoms appear. It is commonly used in routine health checkups or personal health assessments. Understanding your risk early can motivate you to adopt healthier habits and seek medical advice when necessary.
The calculator assigns a point value to each risk factor, and the total score indicates your risk category. The higher your score, the greater your chance of developing type 2 diabetes in the future.
| Factor | Range | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 18 to 70+ years | 0 to 13 points |
| Gender | Male or Female | 0 to 1 point |
| Ethnicity | South Asian, Black, Chinese, Mixed, or White | 0 or 6 points |
| Family History | Parent, sibling, or child with diabetes | 0 or 5 points |
| Waist Size | Less than 90 cm to over 110 cm | 0 to 9 points |
| BMI | Below 25 to 35+ | 0 to 8 points |
| Blood Pressure | Diagnosed or on medication | 0 or 5 points |
The diabetes risk calculator guides you through a series of simple questions and provides a final score that estimates your risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Follow the steps below to complete your risk assessment.
Start by entering your age. The older you are, the higher your risk tends to be. Only individuals 18 years or older can use this tool.
Choose your gender. Males are generally assigned a slightly higher risk score than females.
Select the option that best describes your ethnic background. People of South Asian, Black, Chinese, or Mixed ethnicity may have a higher risk and will receive additional points.
Indicate whether you have a parent, sibling, or child diagnosed with diabetes. A positive family history increases your overall risk score.
Input your waist circumference in centimeters or inches. Larger waist measurements are associated with higher diabetes risk.
Enter your height and weight in your preferred units. The calculator will automatically compute your Body Mass Index (BMI) and assign points based on the result.
Answer if you have ever been diagnosed with high blood pressure or have been prescribed medication for it. High blood pressure adds to your diabetes risk score.
After answering all questions, you will receive a total risk score and a risk category:
The calculator will show a detailed score breakdown by each factor (age, gender, ethnicity, family history, waist size, BMI, and blood pressure). This helps you understand which areas contribute most to your risk.
