The recommended treatment of prediabetes is very similar to the prevention measures for Type 2 diabetes. In the majority of the cases, the progression of prediabetes can be stopped and even reversed, by taking control of your healthy eating and fitness habits.

For prediabetes, losing excess weight thru proper diet and exercise will improve the body’s ability to use insulin and process glucose.

It is being suggested that the Type-2 diabetes drug metformin is beneficial to some individual with prediabetes or impaired glucose tolerance. Study subjects were treated with metformin and it reduced the risk of getting Type-2 diabetes by approximately 31%. Metformin is not currently approved in the United States by the FDA for use as a prediabetes treatment but there are scientists who continue to study its effectiveness in the prevention of Type 2 diabetes.

When you have risk factors for prediabetes, you can still take measures to prevent the disease. And if you already have prediabetes, there are steps which can keep it from turning into Type 2 diabetes.

It is a plain simple fact; your risk for prediabetes is higher if you are overweight and physically inactive. You need to watch your weight. Losing 5 to 10 percent of your body weight will help you prevent or at least delay Type 2 diabetes. It starts by making healthy food choices. It’s ok to start small, by limiting the amount of fat you eat and by eating more fruits, vegetables and fiber.

When you are active, it is a simple fact that your body uses glucose. The more active you are, the more glucose your body uses for energy. This will keep the sugar from building up in your blood. Exercise also improves insulin resistance. Walking is a great way to start.

If you smoke, quit, if you don’t smoke, don’t start. It is simply that easy. And it can reduce your risk of getting Type 2 diabetes and other health problems.

Work with your doctor to keep blood pressure and cholesterol under control. With prediabetes, you are more likely to get heart disease than someone with normal blood glucose levels. High cholesterol also increases your risk for Type-2 diabetes.

It’s very simple – to prevent prediabetes you must live a healthier lifestyle. This will not only prevent prediabetes but it will also prevent developing Type 2 diabetes.
