Diabetes Treatment in Ayurveda
The tradition of Ayurvedic medicine is a form of deep-rooted medicine which is native to the Indian subcontinent and is practiced in many parts of the world as another form of alternative medicine. It believes in flushing the entire body of all toxins and waste and then beginning a healthy life with a new diet and a way of non-stressful living.
In the theory of Ayurveda, the disease of diabetes isn’t a lack/or inability to use insulin. Instead diabetes and other diseases are caused by poor lifelong maintenance of the body that can be restored thru Panchakarma actions such as herbal eradication of the pancreas, liver, colon, spleen as well as the digestive system, revision of the diet as well as exercise, herbal massages, yoga as well as breathing exercises.
After the Ayurveda practitioner makes the diagnosis of diabetes, he will begin to care for the diabetic in a methodical approach. This treatment method will include a number of Panchakarma therapies and Rasayana treatments.
The purposes of the Panchakarma therapies are for flushing out the pollutants in the body. These actions are called pre-purification, main purification, and post purification. Included are also types of other treatments such as massages with fermented liquid, oil massages, herbal purification, and medicinal enemas.
The Rasayana treatments then begins to nurture the entire body, to set the doshas back into balance as well as to replenish the body. The elements of these treatments are diet regulations, practicing yoga and stress free living daily, and the intake of medications and Ayurveda tonics.
After this total and complete treatment therapy, the Ayurveda practitioner will consult with you on the ways to maintain a healthier lifestyle. The results and benefits of this treatment are revealed only when the Rasyana treatment is completely finished and the practitioner’s advice is stringently followed. Results usually become apparent in 3-4 weeks when the body begins to rejuvenate.
Panchakarma for Diabetics
Pre-cleansing treatments are used to release the toxins, as well as open the circulation canals and generally prepare the body for discarding all wastes. For diabetes the common pre-cleansing treatments are known as Snehapanam, Thalapothichil and Thakradhara.
Snehapanam – During the Snehapanam treatment consists of a medicated ghee prepared with herbal paste, milk, herbal juice, etc. Snehapanam is consumed one time daily on an empty stomach and continues for 3 – 7 days.
Thalapothichil – In this phase, the scalp is totally covered with high quality medical pastes. This allows any medicines to enter more rapidly into the cells of the brain. This also calms the system of nerves as well as provides renewal.
Thakradhara – This treatment involves pouring buttermilk which is rich with medications on the forehead to induce coolness in the brain as well as relaxing the mind and reducing psychological stress.
Main Purification Treatment
This includes Panchakarma treatments of Vamanam, Virechanam and Vasti.
Vamanam – This induces vomiting which eliminates the acids and toxins of upper digestive tract.
Virechanam – This taking of oral medications leads to purging of toxins and waste through the lower intestinal track. Excess bile waste is eliminated. This treatment begins early one morning. After 1 – 2 hours when the bowels are emptied, all accumulated toxins are eliminated.
Vasthi – This is an enema treatment. This evacuates accumulated toxins as well as metabolic wastes.
Rasayana Therapy
These add nourishments to the body which rejuvenates the mind and the body. This restores and balances the body purposes and preserves the overall healthy life. Rasayana involves oral medications and regulation of the diet.
Oral Medicines – The oral medicines for treatment of diabetes will be made from pure medical herbs, spices and leaves.
Diet Regulations – These will be advised for the diabetic after and during treatment. This diet will firmly avoid all types of sugar. Eating rice, potatoes, bananas, and fruits which are sweet will also be let alone. This diet will be low fat, low in calories, and an alkaline diet.
Yoga and Lifestyle – Meditation and yoga exercises will be done daily to replenish and rebalance the emotional and physical systems. Meditation, yoga postures which are light, and breathing exercise will be taught.
After the Panchakarma experience the diabetic will be advised to rest for 1 to 2 weeks. The body during this time will be weak from the purification therapies and will need the time to return to normal functioning.
