Diabetes Symptoms
Diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease which involves the amount of insulin in the blood system. There are many types of diabetes mellitus but the two major types are Type 1 diabetes also referred to as juvenile diabetes, and Type 2 diabetes which is the form of diabetes that is the most common. Both forms of diabetes are basically metabolic disorders which affect the body's ability to process and use sugar or metabolize glucose.
There are also forms of diabetes which are not involved with the blood system but the retaining of water in the body. Along with these forms of diabetes, there is also Gestational diabetes which develops when a woman is pregnant and also Prediabetes which is a condition that bears watching but it not quite bad enough to begin any treatment.
All of these forms of diabetes have different symptoms as well as other different aspects of the disease. They also all have different complications.
Type 1 diabetes refers to a condition where there is no insulin to metabolize glucose and leads to low levels of glucose in the blood where Type 2 diabetes is a condition where there is abnormally high glucose in the blood.
The hormone insulin is the biggest factor in most forms of diabetes. Insulin is produced by the pancreas. Insulin manages the path of glucose from the blood system into the cells of the body where it is the source of energy for the body to function on.
In Type 1 or juvenile diabetes, the cells which produce insulin in the pancreas have been destroyed probably by some immune system response. With Type 2 diabetes, the pancreas is still able to produce insulin but the cells in the body are resistant to its effects. This is also known as "insulin resistant" diabetes.
The symptoms of course do vary by type but some symptoms which are common with most forms of diabetes mellitus are:
- Extreme thirst
- Fatigue
- Excessive urination
- Wounds which heal slowly
- Blurring of vision
- Weight loss
But there are those rare times when this disease is present but there are no symptoms. This shows why it is important to get regular checkups throughout your life time.
This section "Symptoms of Diabetes" will go into greater details for the symptoms of all forms of diabetes, as well as when to see a doctor, and also the symptoms of complications.
