Diabetes Medications

There are many medications used in the treatment of diabetes. There are several types of diabetes with the two which are most frequently diagnosed being diabetes mellitus - Type 1 diabetes and Type 2 diabetes and both are treated somewhat differently. Type 1 diabetes occurs when the body produces little or no insulin and Type 2 diabetes occurs when insulin is produced but the cells in the body are unable to use it.

Type 1 diabetics need to be on some form of insulin for their entire life. This includes rapid acting, intermediate acting, long acting as well as regular insulin. All forms of insulin therapy need to be injected as there is no oral form of insulin. A newly diagnosed Type-1 diabetic will need to learn how to give these injections to themselves. There are also oral medications that help the body produce insulin or work in other ways to help control blood glucose levels and these types of medications are used with both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

There are additionally many medications that are used to prevent complications, including blood pressure medications as well as cholesterol lowering medications. Often a primary physician may but a diabetic on the blood pressure and cholesterol medication even before these problems arise because of the high risk of developing heart problems or kidney diseases.

No matter what medications the doctor prescribes for you, it is extremely important to take these medications only as directed. You should also know what the side effects for any of your medications are and if any of these side effects develop you should speak with your doctor about them.

Diabetes is a unique disease which creates many problems for the diabetic so it is extremely important that all instructions from the doctor are followed faithfully. This is the only way to prevent the plethora of complications that can develop. Many of these complications can be very severe and in some cases even life threatening.
