Canine Diabetes Treatment
Once your dog has been diagnosed with diabetes the treatment of his disease will be similar to the treatment for an adult who has diabetes. This will include diet and insulin therapy. And all dogs need exercise – so your still will too.
Your dog will need to be kept on a strict schedule for feeding as well as insulin injections. Your veterinarian will probably recommend a diet which is high in fiber as well as complex carbohydrates. You will be able to find a good brand name food with these qualities at your local pet store. This type of diet will help avoid elevations of glucose levels and in combination with the insulin injections will keep your dog’s blood glucose regulated. Your vet or vet’s assistant will teach you how to give injections to your dog. The needle is so small your dog will not be bothered by it at all.
Your dog will need fairly regular blood glucose checks to make sure the insulin and diet are working properly and to make sure the amount of insulin is properly regulated. Your dog will need insulin for the rest of his life.
It is usually advised by vets, that your dog have only one caretaker at home in order not to mess up the regular schedule of shots and feedings. It is also advisable to keep a written schedule as well as a diary of all injections, and feedings along with any complications or symptoms that you notice.
It is very important to treat your dog as scheduled since without regular treatment, canine diabetes can be fatal.
If your dog is diagnosed with diabetes there is not any reason for you to get sad or depressed. First of all your dog can pick up your moods. And second please remember that many dogs have lived long and happy lives while having diabetes – your dog can also.
